You can run out of threats first: Most kos are decided by who has the last usable ko threat. Starting unnecessary ko fights or reconnecting too early burns your threats and hands the initiative (and usually the ko) to your opponent. It gives your opponent free moves: Every time you make a ko threat elsewhere, your opponent gets to answer in the ko or ignore you and play another big threat. Recklessly engaging means you’re basically letting your opponent play two moves in a row whenever they want. In short: only fight a ko when it’s clearly worth more than the threats you’ll have to spend, and when you have (or can create) more/bigger threats than your opponent. Otherwise you just damage yourself.
