Chemical Hearts feels less like a typical romance movie and more like reading someone’s private emotions. Quietly emotional and beautifully imperfect, the film captures how two lonely people can find comfort in each other without magically fixing everything. Henry and Grace share a connection that feels fragile, real, and painfully human. The ending hurts in a soft way, because sometimes love exists even when people are not fully ready to hold onto it.
movie
The movie is supposed to be about two seniors in HS. Despite this, the main female character (Grace) looks like she's in her mid 20s and the main male character (Henry) looks like he's about 16. The entire movie was uncomfortable, awkward, and unbelievable making it a very hard watch. Anyone who isn't a teen (or older but very immature for their age), will wish they hadn't wasted their time on this one.
Betty dumpes Jughead, hookes up with Archie who than has a car accident and dies - this is your prequel to this movie. Then she only has to change schools and BAM! there you have a whole season of Chemical Hearts ;-) Of course, the Riverdale writers would have to change the plot (less Twin Peaks more The Perks of Being a Wallflower) but they change it every season anyhow, so... there you go. What I wanted so say is that although it is an alternative coming of age movie, this kind of "alternative" has been done before and does not feel new. The story is new, the Grace character is somewhat new, but the overall look & feel is not and that is why I am honestly disappointed with this movie.
Chemical Hearts is definitely not your average teenage romance. It definitely is unique in terms of the story line and the strange characterisation, but I felt they took this uniqueness too far. It felt far fetched and bordered on plain bizarre. It's boring, I was continuously jumping ahead and it overall made zero sense to me. But Lili and Austin have acted brilliantly, so watch it for that!
