ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction

Zombies of Mass Destruction is possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be a "B" Sci-Fi channel movie but it wasn't even that good. There was really no plot, no point, poorly developed characters, and just an overall bad attempt at a movie. Don't ever watch this movie unless you want to laugh at a poor excuse for anything. I literally felt like I was watching a soap opera with zombies. I will tell you right now, Zombies of Mass Destruction gets the WillyT Seal of DISapproval. There really is no story so I will just rant and talk about what was wrong with this movie. A gay man and his boyfriend go to his mother's house to come out of the closet. He tries to find the words and when he finally does his mother is already a zombie. How was this possible? There was no zombie to begin within the house. And if a zombie did take a bite out of her why would it just leave? Wouldn't it just finish the job? This movie just makes no sense at all. The son ends up pinning her up against the wall. She escapes, of course, and the two decide to make a run for it. One grabs a weed whacker and just goes to town. A young woman comes home and she is Iranian, I think, and her neighbors are racist white trash. She goes on a date with some guy and he ends up being the first one bitten. "It's my blood." He screams as he bleeds out. I lost it. It was too funny. This has to be the worst special effects I have ever seen in a zombie movie. The movie itself starts with a blind man poking around and he stumbles upon a zombie and he inevitably gets eaten. It was the stupidest beginning to a movie. I'm not going to lie. I turned this movie off. After the girl goes into the basement with the white trash family, the wife gets bitten, and on the news we find out that the zombie attack is because of Iraq. That's right, Iraq has the ability to create the walking dead and they attack the United States. The family ties the girl up and the last thing I see if her father running around with a shotgun looking for his daughter. Now, the one good thing I will say about this movie is that it is so bad, it's almost good. I can't really say that without laughing but throughout this movie I laughed a lot. Was I supposed to, I have no idea but I did. The crazy father disapproves of his daughter's boyfriend and when he sees him on the street as a zombie, he blows his head off with a shotgun. That is where I lost control and could not put up with this disaster anymore. Never watch this movie. Not even if you are drunk or higher than a kite. I'm not even sure if this movie is real.

Well, if you are into the genre there basically is no reason why you shouldn't watch this movie. It's definitely better than the average low-budget zombie-flick. But this obviously is not a movie without it flaws. I can tell what this movie tried to achieve and how but I can't exactly say that they succeeded with it. They tried to make this a comedy, more than a straight-forward gory shocker, which is in my opinion also the right direction to head in when you have such a small budget to spend. No way people are going to take your movie serious when you are trying to create a creepy, realistic and shocking horror movie with zombies in it when you only have a couple of thousands of dollars to spend. This movie seems to realize that and it doesn't take itself too seriously. It makes the movie entertaining but I wish I could also say that it works out for the best of the movie. Problem is that the writing just isn't very clever or funny. The movie of course has a very simply concept and a standard main premise of a small town being overrun by a sudden zombie plague. They tried spicing things up by adding in some quirky characters, that are however doing such unlikely things in the movie that they rather work out as stupid than funny really. Their responses to all of the situations don't even work out in a comical way, though you can tell that they were really supposed to. One persons mother gets turned into a zombie, another person sees her boyfriend being teared up and eaten alive, another one looses both parents but they all seem to be cool with that and don't seem to be too worried about the whole situation. And this is not spoiling much really, since none of it seems relevant for the movie its story or any of its characters at all. What the movie also tried to add in was some social satire. The Iraq war and gays are the two elements that the writers decided to write a social commentary around. But again, the writing just isn't very clever or witty so it all falls kind of flat and just doesn't seem to add enough. It certainly doesn't make the movie any more believable to watch and rather makes it more silly, in a bad way, instead. But oh well, if you are into this genre there really certainly are far more worse movies to watch. At least this movie was still good looking with its visual style and didn't seem all that cheap, though no doubt that this was a cheap movie to make. It has some good gore, that is mostly being used for its comical effect though. It therefore shouldn't shock anyone too much, most definitely not the most hardened genre fans. For this sort of movie it also definitely featured some good acting, which is all the more an accomplishment due to its simplistic script and dialog and the fact that basically all actors in this movie had never appeared in anything else before. This movie does a great job building up throughout and makes great jokes along the way. I absolutely love this movie. From the closeted gay man with his totally out and about lover having to play it straight for the crazy church goers. I never would have thought to take out a zombie with a weed-whacker. Frida, what can I say, excellent character, very funny way of dealing with other Americans confusing her background. Her father, the Iranian, too funny on his search for Frida. He is totally bad-ass about it too. And the stereotypical American family, classic crazy father. This is a movie that can really suck you in. Definitely give this move a chance, and I am sure you will not be disappointed.

This film reminded me of a George Romero zombie movie, no not the good old ones I mean the crappy modern ones where he tries to shoehorn in some political commentary and it just doesn't work. Billed as a political zombie comedy it fails on all three levels. Politics? Well, it mentions politics but has nothing to say about it really. It's just there. Zombies? This isn't too bad, there's some good scenes of zombie action but they are spaced too far apart and the gaps are filled with boring scenes. Comedy? It's just not funny, at all. It thinks it is, but it isn't. I wouldn't waste your time, nothing happens for 30 minutes and the zombie bits are only slightly better than a cheap 80's Italian zombie flick. Rent one of those instead it's got more laughs (unintentional) and will probably have a lot more action. None of the characters have stories that lead anywhere which must surely be indicative of one hell of a crappy piece of fiction to even the least discerning viewer.

First off I'd like to address the audio issue, whoever mastered this needs to learn that when something is only 20ft away is doesn't need a second worth of reverb this caused pretty much any noise off screen to sound incredibly awful. This is something that shouldn't be a problem even in a low budget film it would've been better off with no processing. As for the zombie scenes I was actually surprised at the quality of makeup and acting during these scenes, some of the effects were noticeably low budget but overall quite impressive for what they had to work with, there was a lot of camera cuts which seemed a little over done. In the political sense it addressed several issues touching on homosexuality, religion, mayoral office, and the middle east. it did seem to overemphasize them but perhaps that was the point. I only had a problem with how they were trying to make a point it detracted from the flow of the movie, there would be one scene where they're fighting zombies and then the entire mood changes to make political point it seemed like the writer wrote a political movie then an editor came along and said what do you think of adding zombies. The scenes didn't mesh together and felt forced. The cast seemed a good fit for the characters they played, however the acting was definitely B-film quality I'd say the gay couple and the Iranian girl were by far the best actors/actress of the film. The Iranian father's actions and lines seemed rehearsed and forced. The zombies seemed as you would imagine from most zombie movies slow, stupid and bloodthirsty. In conclusion a Zombies of Mass Destruction is a zombie film crashed into a political movie and didn't have any insurance to fund the collision repair, which makes for decent zombie killing action mixed with b-c class acting and interruptions of over-exaggerated political views, when I say interruptions I mean it takes on the mood of an entirely different movie.

ZMD is about an Iranian-American girl named Frida, who is always thought of as being iraqie and who is being forced a deli job by her dad. Also, you have Tom, who comes back to Port Gamble (the conservative setting for the film) to tell his mother that he is gay. Then, all of a sudden, a zombie outbreak occurs! And those three people have to fend off the zombie apocalypse while trying to get out of Port Gamble. The greatest thing about ZMD is it's comedy. The director and writer, Kevin Hamedani, is great at comedy and shows it well through the political satire in the film. There are great jokes in this film, like jokes about gays, Iranian culture, American culture, religion, rights, and, of course, zombies. The biggest complaint is that the film does get a bit TOO preachy. There is a preacher in this who believes that he can cure homosexuality. And this would be a good minor joke for the film IF they played it that way. But the film overplays the joke too much. Also, the acting does get a bit cheesy at times (even though it maybe the film's intent). But, if you love zombies and if you love political satire, ZMD is the film for you. It's a funny,smart, and overall fun time. I suggest you watch this film with a group of friends, because this is a great film to hang out and have fun with. And that's how I think the After Dark Horrorfest is supposed to be about: to watch these films with a bunch of friends. Sure, some of them aren't always fun, but they're a good time. Like this film.

Rubbish, boring, unfunny... go somewhere else to find a zombie flick Nothing new in this film..literally nothing, I didn't know if it was meant to be a comedy as there were so few gags in the whole film (I'm being over generous there!), the zombie effects were fine but we've seen so much zombie action we need a new take on it.. as I said nothing new here Spoiler Bit There's no chance of spoiling this film as it manages all on it own, but just in case... what was the last scene about.. the speech bit by the new mayor, did we have to listen to that boring speech just in order to see the 'oh so hilarious' kids pictures, 'I miss my dad' with blood spurting out..repeated with arm missing ha ha. 'I hate Arabs' is that funny? Or did we have to listen to the speech so that we get the twist ending that there is no twist ending and the last laugh is on the film makers who got to make us watch this tripe... very poor, can wait, preferably a lifetime, for the sequel

One of the worst movies i have ever seen, how can they even call it a movie. not to forget one of the most racist crap out there, Talking about the story, which didn't even existed, they don't tell you how it got started, what happened and how it ended 29 weeks later, its a shame to the zombie genre, horror genre and the horror comedy genre. Not even a good kill to show for all the money that went down the drain on this thing. Even * movies have better stories. Those who have already seen this thing, my condolences, those who haven't stay away, save your money and save your time.

A great movie, great gore, great characters. Especially if you love Zombie movies. Gore a zombie aficionado would appreciate. Special effects have gone a long way. first time I've seen entire half of someone's face get blown off and completely believe it. One character gets the skin ripped off his face(somehow really funny) and a couple non-zombies get killed in ways that surprise you so much you laugh out loud then feel really guilty for it. The jokes were hitting left and right and it got a deserved round of applause from the audience. The reason why zombie movies are so great is the interaction of the living characters but this one had the deeper, socio-political stuff I haven't seen since Night of the living dead original. Some, and I stress SOME of the jokes landed flat because a couple characters were over the top. I'm surprised this is a festival movie. Great stuff. A cult classic for sure.

I didn't know what to expect going into this other than Zombies. I was really surprised. A lot of people have compared it to Shaun of the Dead, and there is some definite homage there. No offense to the actors in this, but they just aren't Simon Pegg. There are really no scares that I remember, but the effects themselves are not that bad (remember - non Hollywood!) I really laughed a lot at this flick. Some of it was at corniness, some was some good humor. At one point I did think that this would be a good candidate for an (over the top) Americanized version of Shaun of the Dead. It really picks on so many aspects of culture. The lead actress really did a good job, as did the two playing Lance and Tom. I think "Lance" gets some of the best lines and has some good comedic timing. As long as you don't mind a little poking fun at yourself and are not looking for the next over-the-top, over-polished Hollywood turd, this is a very enjoyable movie.
